"The contributions of the Hispanic community to America go back to before there was a nation. The impact made to our military, our businesses, science and technology, the arts and sports, politics and civics and so much more speaks to the vital role Hispanics have played in our past, and will continue to make in our future," stated Vargas. He added, "As a proud, patriotic American, veteran and business-owner, I'm also proud of my heritage and this museum would serve to illuminate the American story for the benefit of everyone."
Vargas had been appointed by Congress to a Commission to study the feasibility of the creation of an American Latino Museum, its possible content and whether it should exist within the Smithsonian Institution. The Commission delivered its report to Congress and the President in May 2011.
"There is no better leader for the next phase of our campaign for a National Museum of the American Latino than Danny Vargas," said Estuardo Rodriguez, Executive Director of FRIENDS. "He brings a diverse background to this work, with decades of entrepreneurial success, public service on the local, state and national levels, and laudable commitment to his community. Danny is a true exemplar of the contributions American Latinos have made since before the founding of this country, and we are thrilled to have him on the team."
