Greenhouse Scholars' "Venus de Miles" Bike Ride Fundraising Event Earns Top Ranking in a Competitor Magazine Poll for the State of Illinois
BOULDER, Colo., Jan. 30, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- What do you get when you mix bike riding and fundraising on the streets north of Chicago? You get one of the top-ranked cycling events in the U.S., according to readers of Competitor magazine.
In Fall 2012, Competitor magazine asked its readers to identify their favorite sports-related activities, places, and events in its annual poll. Announced in its January 2013 issue and on competitor.com, "Venus de Miles" Illinois was voted "Best Cycling Event" in Illinois.
Greenhouse Scholars, which provides comprehensive personal and financial support to high-performing, under-resourced college students, puts on this annual fundraising event.
"Venus de Miles brings community members together in support of inspiring young leaders," said Andra Pool, chief operating officer, Greenhouse Scholars. "At Greenhouse Scholars, we are committed to helping create real and lasting change in the lives of our Scholars and their communities. We are leveling the playing field for America's youth."
Venus de Miles Illinois garnered broad public support from volunteers, individuals, donors, corporations, and foundations in 2012. Top sponsors for the premier Venus de Miles Illinois event included LUNA and Trek.
"Venus de Miles is a celebration of sisterhood and giving back to a remarkable cause," said Teresa Robbins, director, Venus de Miles. "We look forward to continuing to bring the event to the community, where among many other benefits, participants receive gourmet food both on the course and off, complimentary spa services, and cocktails post-ride."

About Greenhouse Scholars
Founded in 2005, Greenhouse Scholars is a Boulder, Colorado-based non-profit providing comprehensive support for inspiring and under-resourced students from Illinois and Colorado. Through its "Whole Person" approach of intellectual, academic, financial and professional support, Greenhouse Scholars is committed to cultivating the next generation of community leaders.
Becoming a Greenhouse Scholar is a highly selective process. The students are from the most under-resourced communities: 72 percent of Scholars are the first in their families to attend college, and 40 percent of their families live below the poverty line. Yet they demonstrate extraordinary potential: their college GPAs are typically 30 percent higher than their peers, and, with the support of the Greenhouse Scholars program, their chances of graduating from college are eight times higher than other low-income and first-generation students. Since 2005, Greenhouse Scholars has served nearly 100 students.
Greenhouse Scholars is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. For more information about the organization and its events, visit greenhousescholars.org and facebook.com/GreenhouseScholars.
