LAS VEGAS, Mar. 4, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- As underground utility vaults reach the end of their life cycle, they create conditions for equipment damage - as well as hazards to public safety through street cave-ins and underground explosions that can propel a manhole cover airborne with missile-like force.
Replacing aging vaults traditionally has been an expensive, disruptive process requiring massive excavation, prolonged street closures and electrical service interruptions. But an innovative alternative available from Veteran Infrastructure Products (VIP) meets this increasing need with an ingenious, economical solution: the Voltek Underground Vault Replacement System.
Developed by Los Angeles-based Voltek International, Inc., the system has been installed by NV Energy Reno, Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADW&P), Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E), and the City of Anaheim.
The Voltek System creates a structural envelope within the failing vault. The new vault fits inside the existing structure in panelized pieces, with easy installation through the manhole - eliminating the need for excavation. A cable trap panel makes complex splicing unnecessary, as linemen are not required to remove the old cable and install new conductor.
After installation, the original structure can continue to decay around the Voltek System without any adverse service or maintenance issues.
Other advantages include:
- Greatly reduced installation time
- Strong and lightweight panels
- Panels can be manufactured in custom sizes
- Panels are non-corrosive, waterproof, chemical and UV resistant, fireproof and weather-resistant
VIP president Rusty Rice also sees the Voltek System's potential to save money for federal government agencies. VIP is the exclusive sole source for government procurement of Voltek System vaults.
Says Rice: "Every agency and utility company responsible for maintaining underground vaults can benefit. The Voltek System provides the ideal solution for improving the condition of our national infrastructure."
