Virtual Dementia Tour® Recognizes National Alzheimer's Awareness Month, November 6
National Take the Tour Day Honors the 5.4 Million Americans Living with Dementia
ATLANTA, Oct. 30, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On Thursday, November 6, Second Wind Dreams® will present the Virtual Dementia Tour (VDT®) at the Theodore Roosevelt Executive & Legislative Building, 1550 Franklin Avenue, Mineola, NY in the 2nd floor Ceremonial Chamber from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in recognition of Second Wind Dreams' National Take the Tour Day.
The Virtual Dementia Tour is a scientifically proven method that builds sensitivity and awareness in individuals caring for those with dementia by altering participants' physical and sensory abilities with props and circumstances to simulate Alzheimer's disease. Participants are then placed in a "normal living situation" and asked to perform simple tasks. Within seconds of receiving instruction, participants experience and react with evident, dementia-like behaviors.
According to the Founder of Second Wind Dreams and inventor of the Virtual Dementia Tour, P.K. Beville "The Virtual Dementia Tour gives insight into the realities of dementia in a way that can only be provided through personal experience. National Take the Tour Day represents a way to stand up for those living with dementia today in this country. These people need a voice, and they cannot wait on a cure."
President and CEO of the Alzheimer's Foundation of America, Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. will experience the Virtual Dementia Tour along with prominent members of the New York community. Nassau County Executive, Edward P. Mangano will share remarks with participants to commemorate National Take the Tour Day 2014.
This day will also allow more than 2,500 people nationwide to join the ranks of the 1 million people who have participated in the Virtual Dementia Tour. Participants will visit one of approximately 100 eldercare communities that will open its doors and offer the tour free of charge.
National Take the Tour Day was initiated in 2013 as a way for everyone to stand in solidarity for the 5.4 million Americans living with dementia.
