VTV Family Outreach Foundation Calls On U.S. Senate To Establish National Center For Campus Public Safety
WASHINGTON, March 6, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The VTV Family Outreach Foundation (VTV) today called on the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee to approve legislation at their meeting on Thursday that will create a National Center for Campus Public Safety. Currently, campus public safety officers are the only first responders without a comprehensive federal support resource to share best practices, research and training.
"This Center will empower campus safety officers across the country with much needed training, research and best practices to increase safety and help prevent campus violence," said Joe Samaha , president of the VTV Family Outreach Foundation, in a statement to the Senate Judiciary Committee. "It will save lives, and afford future students a level of safety not afforded the 32 innocent students, including my daughter Reema, and faculty killed on April 16, 2007."
The Center would create "a one-stop shop for quality research that will allow us to share best practices from around the country," said U.S. Sen. Mark R. Warner (Virginia), the sponsor of the measure, known as the CAMPUS Safety Act of 2013 (S. 433).
The Senate Judiciary Committee will consider the CAMPUS Safety Act of 2013 during their mark-up of the School Safety Enhancements Act of 2013 (S. 146) Thursday morning. The meeting will be held in Room 226 of the Dirksen Senate Office Building and begin at 10 AM.
