"We help American Indian college students in Southern California who face mounting challenges because of tuition increases, reductions in financial aid and other socio-economic disparities," said John Castillo, Ph.D., executive director of Walking Shield, Inc. "Thanks to the generosity of our golfers, sponsors and partners, these hard working men and women will have the freedom to throw their financial worries aside and concentrate on earning their degrees."
Since 2010, Walking Shield's Education Program awarded more than 1 million dollars in college scholarships to American Indian students attending colleges and universities in California and other states. This amount of financial assistance was made possible thanks to the support from the California Community Foundation, College Futures Foundation of California, Southern California Edison and many other supporters.
Meeting a Significant Need
According to the U.S. Department of Education, the college graduation rate of American Indians is 39 percent among all full-time students completing bachelor's degrees in the U.S. This rate is 17 percent lower than the national average and significantly lower than other ethnic groups. Besides providing scholarships, Walking Shield offers mentoring and financial help with tutoring, books, parking fees, tuition and other related costs.
