ATLANTA and TAMPA, Fla., April 4, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Recognizing the important connection between education and health outcomes, WellCare of Georgia, a subsidiary of WellCare Health Plans, Inc. (NYSE: WCG), announced today that the WellCare Community Foundation donated $5,000 to the REACH Georgia Foundation. REACH Georgia provides academically promising students who qualify for the Free or Reduced Lunch Program and strive to be the first in their family to attend college with the academic, social and financial support needed to graduate from high school, access college and achieve post-secondary success. The REACH initiative - Realizing Educational Achievement Can Happen - was launched in February 2012 by Gov. Nathan Deal, who continues to champion the privately funded program.
A recent study by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation shows that better-educated individuals live longer, healthier lives than those with less education, and their children are more likely to thrive. The study also finds that if the health status of less-educated Americans were the same as their college-educated peers, the related improvements in health would save more than a trillion dollars annually.
"Because WellCare's mission is to enhance our members' health and quality of life and education significantly impacts both, it is critical that we invest in programs and services that increase access to education," said Roman Kulich, WellCare's region president, Georgia and South Carolina. "We are pleased to support the REACH Georgia Foundation in helping deserving students realize their full potential."
