NASHVILLE, Tenn., Sept. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- HealthLeaders-InterStudy, a leading provider of managed care market intelligence, reports that while national health benefits company WellPoint Inc. has experienced a decrease in individual and small-group enrollment, they are working to recapture that business lost during the recession. According to the National MCO Analyzer: WellPoint Inc., the company's wide portfolio of products, low-cost options and expertise in selling to the individual and small-group markets leaves it well-positioned to regain business.
WellPoint allows small-group clients to offer a combination of plan designs, with no impact on costs, giving the small-group segment the flexibility they need. The report also finds that as the nation's largest health benefits company, WellPoint is able to negotiate favorable terms with providers in the core 14 states in which it operates, enabling them to offer lower-cost options. This will be important in California and New York, where WellPoint enrolls more than one in five commercial health insurance members.
"If an economic recovery brings workers back under coverage, WellPoint's breadth and network discounts may give it an edge over competitors," said HealthLeaders-InterStudy Product Director Jane DuBose. "In addition, the launch of the American Health Benefit Exchanges will require each state to create a resource where individuals can select from a variety of health plans. As a result, more people may be driven to purchase individual health plans, playing to another WellPoint strong suit."
