Lonnie R. Trasamar, President of Wells Financial Corp. (OTC BB: WEFP) (the Company), the holding company of Wells Federal Bank (the Bank), announced earnings for the fourth quarter of 2011 of $401,000, consistent with earnings for the fourth quarter of 2010. Basic and diluted earnings per share for the fourth quarter of 2011 and the fourth quarter of 2010 were $0.51.
Net income for the year ended December 31, 2011 was $1,500,000, down $315,000 or 17.4% when compared to 2010. Basic and diluted earnings per share were $1.91, down $0.41 and $0.40, or 17.7% and 17.3%, respectively, when compared to 2010.
When comparing the fourth quarter of 2011 with the fourth quarter of 2010, net income was constant as decreases in net interest income after provision for loan loss and noninterest income were offset by decreases in noninterest expense and income tax expense.
When comparing 2011 with 2010 the decrease in net income was due, primarily, to an increase of $432,000 in the provision for loan loss and a decrease in noninterest income. During 2011 fewer loans were originated for sale to the secondary market resulting in a decrease in gain on sale of loans, a component of noninterest income. Please see the discussion below for information on the allowance and provision for loan loss.
In accordance with the Bank's internal classification of assets policy, management evaluates the loan portfolio on a quarterly basis to identify and determine the adequacy of the allowance for loan loss and adjusts the level of the allowance for loan loss through the provision for loan loss. The provision for loan losses increased by $55,000 for the fourth quarter of 2011 when compared to the same period in 2010 and increased by $432,000 for the year ended December 31, 2011 when compared 2010. As of December 31, 2011 and 2010, the balance in the allowance for loan losses and the allowance for loan losses as a percentage of total loans were $2,800,000 and $2,207,000 and 1.6% and 1.2%, respectively.
