While WGU will award up to 100 scholarships, recipients will be selected based on their academic records, financial need, and readiness for online study at WGU, among other considerations. "WGU's competency-based program and affordability was irreplaceable to me," said Brittany Pierce, a recent Master of Arts in Science Education (5-9) graduate. "I currently teach six, seventh, and eighth grade, which means I teach physical science, life science, and earth science. It was really nice to be able to go through my courses on those subjects rather quickly, but also to be able to apply the new information immediately into my curriculum."
WGU's competency-based learning model allows students to study at times that work for their schedule, moving quickly through what they already know so they can focus on what they still need to learn. This allows many students to accelerate their studies, finishing faster, which saves not only time, but money.
Established in 1997 by 19 U.S. governors with a mission to expand access to high-quality, affordable higher education, online, nonprofit WGU now serves 80,000 students nationwide and has 82,000 graduates in all 50 states. Driving innovation as the nation's leading competency-based university, WGU has been recognized by the White House, state leaders, employers, and students as a model that works in postsecondary education. In just 20 years, the university has become a leading influence in changing the lives of individuals and families, and preparing the workforce needed in today's rapidly evolving economy. WGU is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, has been named one of Fast Company's Most Innovative Companies, and was featured on NPR, NBC Nightly News, CNN, and in The New York Times.
