What Makes Americans Smile Most This Holiday Season? Being With Loved Ones and Giving - Rather Than Getting - Holiday Gifts

According to New Survey Issued from Dunkin' Donuts® Packaged Coffee

ORRVILLE, Ohio, Dec. 20, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- Even with challenging economic times and the headaches of holiday travel upon us, Americans can still find something to smile about this holiday season.  A recent survey conducted by Kelton Research on behalf of Dunkin' Donuts® packaged coffee available where you buy groceries revealed that:

  • Eighty-seven percent of respondents reported being with loved ones as the most smile-inducing activity this holiday season,
  • While 88 percent of respondents admit they smile more when giving rather than receiving holiday gifts.

Further research revealed that more women than men are happy spending time with loved ones during the holidays (90 percent versus 83 percent) and smile more when exercising seasonal traditions (70 percent versus 55 percent).  Perhaps all this time spent with others is why more ladies than gentlemen (92 percent versus 84 percent) feel better about giving gifts than receiving them.  

Americans are excited about winter holiday food and drinks.  Over six in ten (63 percent) indulge in their favorite winter holiday foods or drinks, such as eggnog or turkey.  Certain flavors remind people of this time of year perhaps to honor tradition, for nostalgia's sake or even a sweet tooth's desire. According to the survey, three quarters (75 percent) of respondents chose gingerbread or pumpkin as their  favorite holiday flavors rather than cinnamon (67 percent), peppermint (59 percent), baked cookies (57 percent) or cranberry (57 percent), while apples, vanilla and other flavors ranked at the bottom of the list.  

What's even better than indulging in favorite holiday flavors is sharing the experience with a loved one.  Nearly half (42 percent) of all survey respondents would like to have a warm cup of coffee during the holiday season with their significant other, while others prefer to celebrate the holidays with a best friend (18 percent), a parent (15 percent) or even a sibling (8 percent). Interestingly enough, more men than women (48 percent versus 37 percent) prefer to enjoy a cup of coffee with their spouse or partners over other survey choices.
