WICHITA, Kan., July 23, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Wichita's Megan McCurdy took the top spot in the auction industry's top competition Friday, being named the 2013 International Auctioneer Champion for the women's division.
Megan, who has been involved in the family business -- McCurdy Auction -- since she was seven, beat out competitors from throughout the United States when members of the National Auctioneers Association gathered in Indianapolis for their annual convention.
Auctioneers compete in multiple rounds throughout the convention in the closely followed contest, also participating in interviews with a panel of judges. Going into the Friday evening finals on the industry's biggest stage, Megan decided to "just be myself" and enjoy the process.
"Bid calling is very much a matter of individual style. Every one of the contestants was very good, and each is unique. I just tried to relax and do what I do for McCurdy clients every week, for better or worse. When I came off the platform, I told my father (founder and CEO Lonny McCurdy) that was the best I could do," said Megan.
Like most contestants, Megan participated in the competition for several years, coming in second in 2007, then slipping to fifth in 2012 in Spokane, Wash. "This is a rigorous process that forces you to improve in virtually every area -- not just bid calling, but interpersonal skills, listening and self discipline. There's no doubt it's made me a better caller, which of course benefits our sellers," she said.
"Megan will be a great ambassador for the NAA," said Christie King, one of the judges and the only female ever to serve as president of the association. "She was especially well rounded, with very good bid calling talent and a strong performance in the interviews. She will be a great ambassador for the NAA," said King.
She will spend much of the next year traveling the country, representing the auction industry, speaking and training other auctioneers.
