Women's Health Foundation's Below Your Belt Offers a Fresh Perspective for Teen Girls
CHICAGO, Nov. 3, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Women's Health Foundation (WHF) proudly announced the launch of a landing page, blog, and Indiegogo fundraising campaign for its forthcoming book, Below Your Belt: How To Be Queen of Your Pelvic Region. The book is geared towards girls ages 10 – 14, parents, caregivers, educators, and healthcare providers, presenting an integrated discussion of the pelvis, muscles, organs and function in a fun and easy-to-read manner.
The content of the book and blog is based on WHF's programming and research. Since 2010, the Foundation has offered pelvic health education to adolescent girls, first with the development of a school-based curriculum, then creating training workshops for youth-focused community organizations, and piloting a research study to understand and improve adolescent females' pelvic health knowledge and perceptions in three urban high schools in Chicago.
WHF findings showed there is an absence of accurate and accessible pelvic health resources for girls in the U.S. With pelvic health disorders affecting 1 in 3 women in the United States, despite many conditions being both preventable and treatable, the Foundation is motivated to bring this important health information to girls throughout the country.
"By arming young girls with pelvic health education, we aim to equip them with the knowledge to take care of their immediate and long-term health. National research shows that adult women do not fully understand how to be healthy "below the belt", so the key to shifting this paradigm is to start with age appropriate, engaging information," said Missy Lavender, Executive Director of Women's Health Foundation and co-author of Below Your Belt.
In addition to Below Your Belt, WHF is publishing Riding the Potty Train: Better Bathroom Behaviors for Little Girls on the Go, a picture book for parents and caregivers of toddlers, encouraging lifelong healthy bladder habits.
The Indiegogo campaign is an effort to help underwrite the costs of printing books, promotion, and distribution to community organizations. The crowd funding campaign is running through December 31st, 2014. See the campaign at http://igg.me/at/belowyourbelt.
