Worker's Freedom Coalition commits to continuing assistance for Lamar Construction's workforce
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., July 16, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Workers Freedom Coalition has dedicated the past 2 years to helping workers and their families with the issues they have endured while employed at Lamar Construction. Lamar employees have been subjected to wage theft, unsafe working conditions, the lack of safety training, and abuse on the job site. Lamar Construction dealt the final blow to its workforce last Wednesday when they closed their doors with absolutely no notice to their 280 employees. Understanding that the company has clearly been mismanaged and financially unsound for years we believe this situation clearly falls under the WARN Act and encourage Lamar employees to join the Class Action lawsuit filed against the company. Good companies—even those hit by economic hardships—do not close their doors overnight. It is situations such as this that underline exactly why worker protection organizations, like the WFC, are needed.
Currently, the WFC is aiding Lamar workers with filing for unemployment and other displacement benefits and have committed to assisting them with finding new positions. The WFC has been reaching out to local construction contractors that are hiring skilled trades workers, estimators, office staff, and others with construction industry experience. These contractors pay fair wages, with health care, retirement, training, and future advancement opportunities. We have been assured that they have immediate openings.
The WFC was formed to help workers in the construction industry and their families address issues they have on the job. We will carry on this proud work because we believe that ultimately, workers and companies must have a cooperative relationship in order for both to succeed and flourish. Companies that treat workers well are indicative of good management and have the brightest futures and most positive prospects.
