LONDON, Jan. 13, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- World demand to rise 8.6% annually through 2019
World demand for membranes is forecast to increase 8.6 percent annually to $26.4 billion in 2019. Rising output from key industries, including food and beverages and pharmaceuticals, will aid greater demand as membranes can be utilized to meet more stringent purity requirements. Increasingly scarce freshwater resources will promote steady advances in the water and wastewater treatment markets. Desalination facilities are projected to produce an increasing share of drinking water, particularly in arid regions such as the Southwestern United States, parts of the Mediterranean, and the Middle East. Industrial users will also expand their efforts to reclaim and reuse wastewater, in response to heightened expenses associated with the disposal of wastewater and the purchase of fresh process water.
Drug & medical segment to be fastest growing market
Water and wastewater treatment are the most well-established markets for membranes, and as such are expected to show slower gains going forward. However, because of the importance of membranes in desalination, water purification, and water recovery processes, the water and wastewater treatment markets will continue to claim nearly half of global membrane demand. The food and beverage processing market for membranes is projected to show healthy growth, as membranes are increasingly utilized to purify ingredients and finished products. Additionally, through 2019, food and beverage output is expected to rise at an improved pace over the more limited advances seen in the 2009-2014 period. The pharmaceutical and medical segment will be the fastest growing major market for membranes through 2019. Gains will be driven by increasing purity standards in China, India, and other developing markets, and expanding medical applications for membranes.
