'World's Fair Mansion' set for auction in Oswego, Kansas
OSWEGO, Kan., Aug. 4, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- The 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis featured such wonders as the first electrical outlets and a newly invented treat called the ice cream cone. But the exhibits that caught the eye of the late R.O. Deming were those featuring intricate exotic woodwork from Chile, Brazil and Venezuela. Deming bought the wood and shipped it home on 42 rail cars to build what has been known ever since as the Deming Mansion.
And that 12,800-square-foot mansion is now set to be sold at auction on Saturday, Aug. 27, with Torchia-Holmes Real Estate Agency conducting the auction in cooperation with J.B. Robison Auctioneers & Realty.
"It's really stunning, even today," said David Holmes, broker for the agency. "It's full of old, fine woods, with seven fireplaces, leaded glass windows and a third floor so big it has at times been used as a bowling alley and skating rink."
Deming, who moved to Oswego in 1887 to establish a mortgage company, used the home for years as a showplace where he and his family entertained friends and business associates nationwide and abroad.
The mansion, at 918 West 6th Street, Oswego, Kansas, will be sold at noon Saturday, Aug. 27. The contents will be sold over a two-day period Aug. 26 and 27, beginning at 9 a.m. each day. Individuals seeking additional information may visit www.davidholmesauctions.com or call 620-429-1330.
"The real estate will sell to the highest bidder at or above $150,000. Everything in the home will sell individually to the highest bidder – hundreds of pieces of fine furniture, lamps, artwork, mirrors, chandeliers and much more," said Holmes. The home will be open for showings from 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 7 and Aug. 14.
