WPCCU's Youngest Members Get Wild About Saving
Parents and community learn how to protect children from identity theft
LOS ANGELES, April 2, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- In celebration of the 2015 National Credit Union Youth Month, sponsored by Credit Union National Association (CUNA), Water and Power Community Credit Union will reach out to its youngest members (up to 17 years of age), their parents, and to the local community about the importance of a financial education. As an added touch, this year WPCCU will help parents learn how to safeguard their children's financial identities, a quickly growing area of identity theft.

Children, who have clean credit reports and credit histories that may go unchecked for decades, are desirable targets for identity thieves. According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) 140,000 identity frauds against minors are committed each year.
"We believe that by starting youth on the right path towards saving, and providing a sound financial education, credit unions build strong, life-long relationships with their members," said Celeste Zibelli, WPCCU's vice president of marketing and financial services. "Through events like these, we accomplish these goals while keeping children's financial identities safe and making money management fun for kids!"
When a youth account is opened or added to during April with a minimum deposit of $25, each child will receive a special gift. Informational handouts will be available for parents on how to protect their children from identity theft.
