The weekend will commence with an opening ceremony Saturday at 11am, followed by a line-up that features rare and historic aircraft, vintage military vehicles, antique cars, educational displays and demonstrations. Local actors and singers from Twilight Theatre will impersonate 1940's celebrities and perform classic hits throughout the weekend.
WWII veterans from the Atlanta area are expected to attend the opening ceremony.
"WWII Heritage Days is a community celebration that will educate and entertain the entire family," said Jim Buckley, CAF Dixie Wing leader. The event draws history enthusiasts from throughout the southeast.
A weekend highlight is "Keep 'em Flying", a WWII-theme hangar dance featuring the Peachtree Jazz Edition. Proceeds from the dance cover costs associated with hosting "WWII Heritage Days", as well as the ongoing preservation of the group's historic aircraft and "Education Through Living History", a World War II history program made available by CAF Dixie Wing volunteers to schools and youth groups free of charge. The dance will be held Saturday, 6pm-11pm.
Sunday morning will begin with a jeep-top religious service familiar to millions of American servicemen during and since the Second World War.
Participating organizations include the Atlanta History Center, the U.S. Army Signal Corps Museum, veterans groups and living history groups. Local civic organizations and schools will display 1940's exhibits.
Why turn a flying museum into a living history classroom? "Our goal" explained Buckley "is to preserve and honor the service of the Greatest Generation, the men and women who fought and won the Second World War."
