xG Technology Announces New Cognitive Radio System Software Now Shipping
Major Release Leverages xG's Software-Defined Radio Platform to Rapidly Deliver Upgraded Capabilities and Features that Drive New Revenue Streams
SARASOTA, Fla., Oct. 15, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- xG Technology, Inc. ("xG" or the "Company") (Nasdaq: XGTI, XGTIW), a developer of wireless communications and spectrum sharing technologies, has announced that a substantially upgraded version of the new xMax cognitive radio system software product, release 2.6, is now available for delivery. Release 2.6 provides an advanced set of performance features and capabilities that enable higher throughput, stronger security, longer range, and enhanced management tools. The software will be included with xMax product shipments in fulfillment of existing orders, as well as in new deployments.
Release 2.6 leverages xG Technology's patented software-defined radio (SDR) platform to rapidly deliver its upgraded capabilities and features as an over-the-air software update to its customers' networks. This is in marked contrast to upgrades delivered on non-SDR systems, which can entail a full refresh of installed hardware and considerable deployment costs.
Release 2.6 represents a significant upgrade to the core xMax system and incorporates numerous functional enhancements, including the following:
- Increased user throughput of up to 20Mb/s resulting from a new dual radio strategy that leverages both the 900 MHz and 2.4 GHz spectrum bands;
- RADIUS authentication to enable greater system security;
- Next-generation Self-Organizing Network (SON) innovations that drive greater interference mitigation and reduce RF planning and network engineering costs;
- Improved network management, with emphasis on authentication, error logging, location display maps, and performance monitoring delivered through an improved, intuitive GUI interface.
The xMax CN3200 Dual Band Routing Modem (which received FCC certification as previously announced on Oct. 1, 2014), takes full advantage of Release 2.6's capabilities.
According to John Coleman, CEO of xG Technology, this new release is noteworthy for the rich feature set of capabilities it delivers, in addition to the innovative SDR-based delivery method used to distribute and deploy it. "The availability of these extended capabilities and enhancements will drive new solutions in a number of customer areas. Rural telcos will be able to meet performance requirements for cost recovery as well as opening up non-regulated revenue opportunities for them. Meanwhile, sectors like emergency management, utilities and other critical infrastructure, and municipal and other government agencies will benefit from the augmented mix of throughput and mobility."
Mr. Coleman continued, "Rolling out this new product as a simple, over-the-air software update underscores the fundamental benefit and advantage of our software-defined radio platform over other solutions. By removing the need for a hardware refresh, which is usually required in the case of major releases such as this, xG is able to eliminate the extensive costs typically incurred in new hardware distribution and installation, like truck rolls and component replacement. Moreover, this allows xG to significantly extend the product end-of-life of its own xMax hardware products, and drive new and improved revenue streams."
