xG Technology Comments on PCAST Recommendation to Increase Sharing of Spectrum
Need for Spectrum-Sharing Technologies Would Create New Opportunities for the Company's xMax Cognitive Radio Solution
SARASOTA, Fla., July 20, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- xG® Technology, Inc. ("xG" or the "Company") (AIM: XGTU.L, XGT.L), the developer of a portfolio of wireless communications technologies, including cognitive radio networks, supports the recommendations of The President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) for increased sharing of radio spectrum.
The final PCAST report, which was released today, recommends that the President issue a memorandum stating that the U.S. government's policy is to share as much as 1,000 MHz of unutilized government-held spectrum with commercial broadband networks. The goal is to make better use of a huge swath of the radio spectrum now controlled by federal agencies.
The report sets a goal of expanding the development and use of new technologies in order to accomplish spectrum sharing effectively. It identified a number of technology trends that will enable more dynamic and flexible sharing of spectrum, including cognitive radios, dynamic spectrum access, and smart antennas. These are among the key components of xG's innovative technology offering.
The report also pointed out that spectrum sharing brings challenges that require careful coordination between users to avoid harmful interference. The Company's xMax cognitive radio system was designed to operate in challenging radio frequency environments and is able to automatically detect available channels in wireless spectrum, identify unused frequencies, and if necessary, automatically switch to those frequencies to transmit or receive signals.
"We fully support the PCAST recommendations and welcome the opportunity to apply our xMax cognitive radio innovations to the capacity challenges our industry faces," said John Coleman, chief executive officer of xG. "We are confident that our technology will play a key role in making significantly better use of spectrum, and will allow for enhanced services, more competition and lower wireless costs for consumers."
The promotion of spectrum sharing initiatives would create new opportunities for xG. The adoption of cognitive radio technologies, like xMax, could lead to a dramatic increase in spectrum efficiency, which would help ensure that consumer, commercial and government users of wireless systems will maintain unobstructed wireless connectivity in the face of skyrocketing demand. It would also provide new mobile operators, particularly those in rural and underserved markets, with an alternative to deploying systems that previously required licensed spectrum.
