xG Technology Comments on PCAST Recommendation to Increase Sharing of Spectrum

The final PCAST report, which was released today, recommends that the President issue a memorandum stating that the U.S. government's policy is to share as much as 1,000 MHz of unutilized government-held spectrum with commercial broadband networks. The goal is to make better use of a huge swath of the radio spectrum now controlled by federal agencies.

The report sets a goal of expanding the development and use of new technologies in order to accomplish spectrum sharing effectively. It identified a number of technology trends that will enable more dynamic and flexible sharing of spectrum, including cognitive radios, dynamic spectrum access, and smart antennas. These are among the key components of xG's innovative technology offering.

The report also pointed out that spectrum sharing brings challenges that require careful coordination between users to avoid harmful interference.
