Young People to Learn the Business of Sports Through White Collar Sports Foundation
Day-long session on money and careers to include sister of Detroit Lion Ndamukong Suh
DETROIT, May 5, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Southeast Michigan youths can learn about the business side of sports from top coaches, agents, athletes and their families as part of a day-long session being put on by the White Collar Sports Foundation.
The "Business of the Game" event will take place at the Michigan State University-Detroit Center, 3408 Woodward on May 7, 2011 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Among those scheduled to participate: Stan Edwards, father of Detroit native and New York Jets wide receiver Braylon Edwards; Ngum Suh, sister of Detroit Lion Ndamukong Suh and director of operations for the Ndamukong Suh Family Foundation; former MSU Basketball Player and Fox Sports Detroit Commentator Mateen Cleaves; Dr. Percy Bates, faculty representative, University of Michigan Athletic Department; John Ambrose, Michigan State University Office of Admissions; Kris Barnes, general manager of the Novi Ice Arena; Kirk Vickers, CEO of Triad Health and Fitness; and Candice Turner, the academic coordinator for Wayne State University's athletic department.
"Most of the knowledge youths in grade 6 through 12 garner about sports is from an athletic competition," said Jason Harrison, CEO of White Collar Sports. "There really is a whole other side to professional sports tied to business, and young people should know about those career tracks."
In order to allow youths and parents to attend the session for free, the foundation is undertaking a "100 for $100" campaign, to get 100 individuals or corporations to contribute $100 each. Donors will be invited to a sponsor reception after the conference and will hear and meet a special guest speaker.
To register for the session go to "Conference Sign-up" at www.whitecollarsports.com or contact Regina Strong at 248.991.5701. Individuals, companies and churches desiring to sponsor a student or parent can call Nikki Howard Combs at 313.608.8357.
