Youth About Business Kicks Off Summer Business Camps with Merger & Acquisition Simulations
Leadership Training Program Introduces High School Students to the World of Business and Finance
NASHVILLE, Tenn., July 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Youth About Business (YAB), a national nonprofit organization that offers core business education to students from underserved communities, is holding its annual Summer Business Camp for 560 high school students from early June through late July in Houston, Chicago, Atlanta, New York City and Nashville.
Youth About Business is a leadership-training organization for youth in underserved communities that exposes students to a variety of business-related material and experiences that they do not receive in a normal school setting. The organization's flagship program is the YAB Summer Business Camp Program where students learn about the world of high-level corporate finance through merger and acquisition simulation camps.
"Our business camps expose high school students to the world of finance and business in a highly interactive, competitive and collaborative educational setting," said Sam Kirk, executive director of Youth About Business. "Throughout the two week camp, we are introducing underprivileged youth to senior level business executives and, in turn, helping to fill a pipeline of diverse talent for the financial services field and the industries that cater to it."
Inside YAB's Summer Business Camp
At this year's camp, students will be taught to research and analyze public companies, and will be privy to financial terminology such as market capitalization, EBITDA, synergy, leverage ratios, and capital structure – many for the first time. They must understand the strategy and due diligence necessary to determine and execute a feasible transaction. During the negotiations, student teams will assume the leadership of their assigned corporation by acting as the executive management committee and begin their research by reading their annual report.
Each student team is advised by area professionals from some of the most prestigious companies and organizations – including Bank of America, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Federal Reserve Bank of New York, Citigroup and Deloitte -- who serve as business consultants to each team. The executives will help students understand very complex transactions, and give them guidance on the proper techniques used when negotiating a merger or acquisition.
Since its founding in 1992, Youth About Business has hosted approximately 10,000 high school students in its Summer Business Camp program. Ninety-eight percent of all students who participate in YAB's Summer Business Camp graduate high school and attend at least two years of college. The organization's corporate strategic partners include Deutsche Bank, JPMorgan Chase, OppenheimerFunds, The Moody's Foundation, Ernst & Young, and HCA.
