It is the second time that the Basel Declaration grants its "Award for Education in Animal Research". Chiara Ruzza, PhD in pharmacology and molecular oncology, is the prize winner 2013 and takes part in a one-week course on Animal research at the University of Zurich, based on the rules of the 3Rs (Replace, Reduce, Refine). She has been mandated by her university to set up similar courses in Ferrara, with the knowledge and the skills learned at the Zurich University.

Eirini Fragkiadaki, a young veterinarian and researcher at the Pasteur Institute in Athens, attending the Laboratory Animal Science introductory course at the University of Zurich. She is dedicated to developing her university's Department for Animal Research according to the 3R rule (Replace, Reduce, Refine). In the coming years she will focus on education and training and promote the high-quality ethical and scientific standards of the Basel Declaration Society in all issues affecting animal experiments.
