680 Times More Data Travels On US Highways Than Over The Information Superhighway
"Data Drain" From Global Cities Puts Business Data At Risk
PLEASANT GROVE, Utah, Oct. 23, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --
News Summary:
- The average American commuter takes 575GB of company data home with them at the end of every day
- That's 680 times the amount of data they'll move across the internet in the same timeframe1
- Every day, 1.4 exabytes of data moves through New York City alone – that's more data than will cross the entire internet in a day1
- With 37% of Americans having lost a device that stores data in the past 12 months, huge amounts of business data is put at risk every rush hour2
Full Story:
Mozy by EMC today released the findings of its Data Miles study, a research project that, for the first time, lifts the lid on the volume of data that is moved across six of the world's largest cities, including New York and San Francisco.
While much is known about the movement of data over the Information Superhighway, the study, sponsored by Mozy by EMC, reveals the true scale of the data drain caused by laptops, smartphones, USB drives and hard drives carried by modern commuters on actual highways in New York, San Francisco, London, Paris, Berlin and Munich.
Portrait Of An American Commuter
- Huge volumes of data are being moved on the daily commute, with 680 times more data being carried by commuters than they send over the internet.
- The average volume of data carried by an American commuter is 575GB
- The data will typically travel 15.69 miles
- San Fransicans are the most likely to be taking data home with them (78%) and Berliners the least (58%)
- New Yorkers carry the most data per person (594GB) and Berliners the least (379GB)
The Data Journey
Commuter routes strongly influence the movement of data but, the busiest commuter paths do not always contribute the heaviest data drains. This is attributed to the fact that the volumes of data move moved per capita can vary significantly. Bottlenecks in commuter journeys, such as bridges and tunnels, in addition to public transport terminals, become data hotspots where petabytes of business data lingers exposed and at risk.
- In New York City, 1.4 exabytes of data travels with commuters each day: more than an entire day's internet traffic
- As much as 33.5PB of data will travel over the Oakland Bay Bridge every day
- As much as 49 PB of data will travel through the Lincoln Tunnel each day
- Up to 328PB of data travels in the London Tube network every day
- Up to 69PB of data leaves Munich's Hauptbahnhof on a daily basis
- The Paris Metro carries 138PB of data every day
Data Drain Dangers
With 37% of Americans stating that they'd lost a device with data stored on it in the previous 12 months, the risk presented by the nightly drain of data from global cities are significant. Mozy by EMC is urging businesses to open their eyes to the threat presented by the physical movement of data and to apply the same level of care as they do to data transported over digital networks.
Executive Quote:
Dave Robinson, Senior Director, Mozy by EMC
"With the use of laptops, smartphones and tablets causing an explosion in the volume of business data that commuters carry with them, it's never been more important to make sure that the data is protected against loss and theft. Businesses wouldn't send their data over the internet without proper encryption and protection and neither should they send data home with their workforce without backup."
Methodology
The Mozy by EMC Data Miles study was commissioned by EMC and carried out by Tonula in August 2014. 4,000 respondents participated.
