"We are ecstatic to partner with OMAZE to give sports enthusiasts access to the Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic," said Kathleen Tullie, founder of BOKS. "The Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic focuses on being active, and through this effort, we hope to get more kids moving and ultimately help increase the number of schools enrolled in the BOKS program."
An initiative of the Reebok Foundation, BOKS aims to help improve kids' academic performance and overall health by promoting physical activity and nutritional knowledge as a way to jump start children's brains and better equip them for learning. BOKS provides two 12-week sets of curriculum recommended to be run three days a week for 40 minutes before-school.
"Sports have always been an important part of my life, and I learned early on the positive impact that being active can have on your mind and body," said Andrew Shaw. "BOKS plays a key role in getting more children moving in the morning. I am honored to help get more schools and communities involved in this program and have a direct influence on the health of our youth."
BOKS, currently in more than 1,200 schools worldwide, was started by a group of moms in 2009 who were inspired by Dr. John Ratey's book, Spark, which provides compelling evidence that exercise will supercharge mental circuits to beat stress, sharpen thinking and enhance memory in kids. Dr. Ratey states that "exercise is the single most powerful tool to optimize the function of our brains." The BOKS team has shared the stage with First Lady Michelle Obama to promote the benefits of being active and has forged important alliances with organizations like Let's Move Active Schools, ChildObesity180, Alliance for a Healthier Generation, American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance and Partnership for Healthier America.
Testimonials support the fact that students who participate in the BOKS program at schools around the country have experienced increases in attention level in class, among other positive health benefits. Recent studies conducted by the National Institute of Out-of-School Time (NIOST), on behalf of BOKS, validate that exercise, especially before-school, can have an impact on both classroom performance and behavior. NIOST results showed children who were physically active improved significantly more than their peers on assessments of working memory.*
