Bordeau LLC's Operating Director Dave Hansen Announces The Closure Of Menu/MBK Restaurant And The Sale/lease Of 405 8th St NW, Washington D.C.
WASHINGTON, Oct. 27, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Bordeau LLC, owner of the highly acclaimed Table restaurant in DC's Shaw neighborhood (named by Bon Appetit Magazine as one of the US' Top 50 new restaurants in 2013) and of the luxury 42 Degrees Catering company, announced the closure today of its Menu/MBK (Market, Bistrobar, Kitchen) multi-format concept at 405 8th St. NW in D.C.'s Penn Quarter. Bordeau's Operating Director, Dave Hansen, who made the announcement, said, "The company has reached an agreement to cede its lease to its landlord Citadel LLC who will prepare to place the property for sale or lease on the open market." The storied building was long held by Jose Andres' Think Food Group, previously home to his iconic Cafe Atlantico and Minibar. Chef Frederik de Pue and Dave Hansen will refocus their energies towards raising the already highly acclaimed Table Restaurant to even greater heights and attending to the needs of the luxury clients of their group 42 Degrees Catering.
Hansen said, "As a restaurateur with nearly three decades of experience across Europe and the U.S. in revitalizing hospitality properties, I sometimes have to make tough strategic decisions that a restaurant is no longer working. Unfortunately this was the case with MBK, a decision made for the benefit of the existing assets of the group. In this case, the concept, multi-story space, and neighborhood, though all outstanding, proved incompatible with one another. Nonetheless, Menu/MBK produced tremendous value to Bordeau from a conceptual perspective, providing invaluable information on how to improve existing and potential future concepts."
Hansen continued, "Bordeau decided to open this concept to serve as a culinary canvas – to have room to explore new ideas while not disrupting the established brand at Table that our guests have come to expect. I remain very enthusiastic about Chef de Pue's aggressive expansion plans and future work with our trusted partners who have been integral to the great success of Table and 42 Degrees Catering." Table, one of the most sought after reservations to land in the capitol, is already one of the highest regarded new restaurants in the country.
"The restaurant scene in Washington, and any major market, is about differentiating yourself and offering your guests something truly unique and enjoyable," Hansen said. "I think [de Pue] and I share a passion for trying new things, experimenting, and offering that experience. Menu/MBK was a great opportunity to apply this passion for new ideas – we can learn across our business lines and will be inspired to keep experimenting."
Dave Hansen, restaurateur and Chef, has amassed 28 years of experience in every aspect of front and back of house operations. He has worked on successful concepts in D.C., New York, Boston, Los Angeles, and throughout Europe. He is best known as a specialist in revitalizing and reimagining distressed hospitality properties.
Frederik de Pue, Executive Chef and owner, has emerged as a notable culinary talent, with an exceptional eye for detail and honest inspiration behind his food and menus. He translates his global culinary experiences into each dish he prepares, and at Table, he endeavors to create satisfying and sophisticated, yet very comfortable offerings. Before arriving in Washington DC in 2001, de Pue, born and raised in Belgium, trained at the Hotel School Ter Duinen and worked at several top European restaurants for award-winning chefs such as Alain Ducasse and Yves Mattagne.
Chef de Pue is one of the four competitors set to battle next month in an event touted as the 'High Holy Day' in the District's culinary calendar: The Capitol Food Fight. Held in the Ronald Reagan Building & International Trade Center, the event benefits DC Central Kitchen and is sponsored by the Food Network.
