BrandForHumanity.com: Help the Other Side of the World this Christmas
OKLAHOMA CITY, Dec. 11, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- On this side of the world, name brand clothes are common Christmas gifts. On the other side of the world, where most of those clothes are made, garment workers are among the poorest paid on the planet.
That's where Brand for Humanity comes in. The initiative aims to address this discrepancy by offering a new way to buy clothes—the "non-brand." Some of the same factories that produce clothes for the large retail brands are offering their own clothing items through the BrandForHumanity.com web portal. Consumers can buy the same quality clothes, but directly from the factory.
The sale of every item through BrandForHumanity.com has a unique benefit—25% of the net profits go back to the garment workers as a profit share, in addition to their regular salaries. These profit share payments are designed to build equity among garment workers and improve living conditions for their families. For countries like Bangladesh that average five billion dollars per year in U.S. garment exports, this is hugely important. Garment workers there are paid as little as $80 USD per month—living conditions are deplorable and generational poverty is the norm. In addition, roughly 80% of garment workers are women and many are sole household providers.
According to Sheikh Mustafiz, creator of Brand for Humanity, "Our government [Bangladesh] is not in a position to help the garment worker. As a manufacturer, producing for the big brands leaves very little profit margin to improve salaries. So we've developed a third way. By selling clothes directly to the consumer, factories can dramatically increase profit margins, share those profits with workers and create better conditions all the way around."
Mustafiz's own company, Cute Dress Industry, is the first to join the Brand for Humanity platform. It will soon be accompanied by other manufacturers willing to abide by the profit share structure and factory safety standards. In order to facilitate this process, Mustafiz has started a Brand for Humanity Indiegogo campaign aimed at raising capital to bolster the platform and attract additional manufacturers.
There are two easy ways for U.S. consumers to get involved this holiday season:
- Purchase items through the BrandForHumanity.com web portal.
- Give to the Brand for Humanity Indiegogo campaign
