Consumers to Spend Most During December Sales [Survey]

BELOIT, Wis., Dec. 1, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- FatWallet.com, where savvy online deal hunters share coupons and get cash back, today announced results from its 2014 Holiday Spending Survey (*TNS Global) and Infographic. Compared to last year, 63% said they plan to spend (overall) the same this holiday season, while 15% said more and 22% said less. They also said they plan to spend slightly more money during December sales than on Black Friday or Cyber Monday deals, and 77% will spend the same or more on holiday gifts, compared to last year.

When asked which items they are most likely to "spend the most" money on during the holidays:

• 55% said Gifts                                       
• 21% said Food
• 9% said Travel  
• 4% said Entertaining           
• 3% or less said Clothing (as a non-gift), Alcohol or Decorations                                        

"Consumers now expect to get more for less and recognize the opportunities to save money when they spend it, especially on gifts," states Brent Shelton, FatWallet Shopping Expert. "Today's smart shoppers will look to add cash back and use online coupons to lower the price on the majority of their holiday purchases."  

When asked which big sales event are you most likely to spend the most money on during the holidays:

• 24% said December Sales
• 23% said Black Friday
• 14% said Cyber Monday
• 9% said Early November Sales
• 6% said Free Shipping Day

Other survey results reveal 3 in 4 will spend the same or more on holiday events and on food and alcohol purchases, while 30% plan to spend less on apparel purchases that are not gifts (clothing, shoes and accessories) and 32% less on holiday travel.
