What began as an employee-initiated project to reduce our footprint on the local landfill resulted in DJG's Columbus headquarters becoming a zero landfill facility in the State of Indiana. Prior to this transformation, DJG was producing 2.5 million pounds of trash annually. By taking inventory of the waste generated, DJG employees were able to identify ways to resell and recycle what was previously considered trash.
Additionally, through the company's Tiny Footprint™ initiative, consumers will begin to see a new logo identifying the products manufactured in the zero landfill facility, first on-line and then on in store packaging. All stakeholders are encouraged to factor long-term environmental sustainability into their decision making processes.
"We're extremely proud of programs like the zero waste designation and our Tiny Footprint™ initiative," said Dave Taylor, President and CEO of Dorel Juvenile Group. "Our business is both about providing a safer today for children as well as a better tomorrow."
Through a multi-year process of combing through and eliminating waste step by step, today DJG does not send any trash to landfills. The facility now produces on average one truck load of non recyclables per month.. This trash is delivered to a waste energy facility in Indianapolis that provides steam energy to help power downtown Indianapolis.
