FirstEnergy Awards Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Grants to 18 Teachers in Northeast Ohio
AKRON, Ohio, Dec. 9, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Eighteen northeast Ohio teachers, representing 14 educator-submitted projects, have been awarded Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) grants from FirstEnergy Corp. (NYSE: FE). The grants will be used for a variety of hands-on projects, workshops and teacher development programs throughout the school year.
The grant winners, their schools and projects are:
- Elizabeth Waller, St. Vincent de Paul Parish School, Akron – Reintroducing honeybees into an urban setting
- Grace Tome, Ritzman Community Learning Center, Akron – How to use electricity to light a light bulb
- Merrick Potter, The Next Frontier Academy, Akron – Use the school's greenhouse to grow plants hydroponically and sell them
- Sam Crews, National Inventors Hall of Fame School, Akron – Design and run a school recycling project
- Sharon Kaffen, National Inventors Hall of Fame School, Akron – Learning monitoring as part of the scientific process
- Tracy Braho, East Community Learning Center, Akron – Make and evaluate chemical (mock) pies
- Amy Ginn, Kristen Graley and Sally Mellinger, Applewood Elementary School, Brunswick – Interactive Kindergarten unit on measurement of height, weight, length and speed
- Maria Kolodziej, Garfield Heights Middle School, Garfield Heights – Using simple machines and electricity to build a contraption that will lift a golf ball 10 centimeters
- Cristina Jones, Lake Middle School, Hartville – Build and race solar-powered cars
- Wendy Nelson, Cloverleaf High School, Lodi – Building circuits to light a light bulb
- Cecilia Lange and Dominic Lariccia, Struthers Elementary School, Struthers – Explore ways to reduce the school's electricity bills
- Sharon R. Ragan, Chaney STEM Academy, Youngstown – Design and create a model of a shed using sustainable materials
- Benjamin Dooley, Chaney STEM Academy, Youngstown – Design, build and use miniature, functional computers
- Jason Freudenberg and Danielle Chine, Austintown Middle School, Youngstown – Build a windmill and a stationary bicycle that can power a dynamo

FirstEnergy offers grants up to $500 to individual teachers and administrators at schools served by its electric utility operating companies and in communities where it has facilities.
Grant recipients are recommended by local educators who make up FirstEnergy's Educational Advisory Council. As part of the program, recipients must furnish a written summary and evaluation of their projects that can be shared with other educators in FirstEnergy's service area.
