FirstEnergy Awards Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Grants to Seven Teachers in Potomac Edison Service Area
WILLIAMSPORT, Md., Dec. 9, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Seven area teachers have been awarded Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) grants from FirstEnergy Corp. (NYSE: FE) in its Potomac Edison utility service area. The grants will be used for a variety of hands-on projects, workshops and teacher development programs throughout the school year.
The grant winners, their schools and projects are:
- Dawn Getzandanner, Spring Ridge Elementary School, Frederick, Md. – Design and build alarm circuits
- Nusret Hisim, Walkersville High School, Walkersville, Md. – Build alternative electricity generation systems such as wind turbines and solar panels
- Lawrence Paul, Parkway Elementary School, Frederick, Md. – Design and build alarm circuits
- Bonnie Pelc, Williamsport Elementary School, Williamsport, Md. – Design and construct a door alarm
- Jennifer Rankin, Northern Garrett County Pre-Kindergarten (ILEGO Robotics Team), Oakland, Md. – Build machines from Legos® to explore gear ratios
- Carolyn Thomas, Wildwood Middle School, Shenandoah Junction, W. Va. – Conduct lab experiments on solar generation
- Vivienne Werner, Gov. Thomas Johnson High School, Frederick, Md. – Light an LED with electricity generated from fruits and vegetables

FirstEnergy offers grants up to $500 to individual teachers and administrators at schools served by its electric utility operating companies and in communities where it has facilities.
Grant recipients are recommended by local educators who make up FirstEnergy's Educational Advisory Council. As part of the program, recipients must furnish a written summary and evaluation of their projects that can be shared with other educators in FirstEnergy's service area.
