Former British Prime Minister Inspires Students and Graduates of Universidad del Valle de Mexico
Tony Blair addresses thousands of students and recent graduates in Mexico City
BALTIMORE, Oct. 22, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair visited Mexico City yesterday to address thousands of students and recent graduates of Universidad del Valle de Mexico (UVM), as well as their faculty and members of the community, about the need for top-quality, accessible higher education.
During his address, Mr. Blair offered advice to students about making the most of their education in the global job market, while promoting their personal and professional development. Mr. Blair also spoke about the many challenges and opportunities of globalization and the changes afoot in societies across the globe. "Change is difficult whether it's in a country, in a community, or for an individual citizen," said Mr. Blair. "Graduates from leading universities like UVM will be prepared to adapt to the always changing world and will be successful in their careers and throughout life."
With 120,000 students on 37 campuses in 18 states, Universidad del Valle de Mexico is the largest private university in Mexico. The university has received the highest level of institutional accreditation and has been recognized as one of the top 10 universities in the country for the past decade.
The university operates widely respected business-incubation programs and works with the International Youth Foundation's YouthActionNet program to support young social entrepreneurs. In 2014, for the fourth year in a row, the university was recognized as a Socially Responsible Company by Centro Mexicano para la Filantropia.
"Events with global leaders like Mr. Blair provide UVM students and graduates with the advantage of an international perspective, an attractive quality for employers," said Douglas L. Becker, chairman and chief executive officer of Laureate Education, Inc. "We're honored that Mr. Blair was able to return to UVM to share his insights and remarkable experiences with our students."
After Mr. Blair's address, 30 students and 10 professors were honored for their academic achievements. This is the second time Mr. Blair has spoken to UVM students and the 10th time he has addressed members of the Laureate community. Mr. Blair has visited such Laureate affiliates as INTI International University and Colleges in Malaysia; Campus Eiffel in Paris; Universidade Anhembi Morumbi in Sao Paulo, Brazil; Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas in Lima, Peru; BiTS (Business and Information Technology School) in Iserlohn, Germany; Universidad Europea in Madrid, Spain; Istanbul Bilgi University in Turkey; and Centro Universitario Ritter dos Reis in Porto Alegre, Brazil.
On December 1, UVM will bring other international leaders to Mexico as it hosts the Laureate Summit on Youth and Productivity in Mexico at its Coyoacan campus, in partnership with Aspen Institute Mexico and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). The event will bring together government, business and academic leaders to discuss how to create and sustain a more productive Mexican workforce.
