Former DOJ Criminal Division Chief Mythili Raman Joins Covington

WASHINGTON, April 29, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Mythili Raman, most recently Acting Assistant Attorney General for the Criminal Division at the U.S. Department of Justice, is joining Covington & Burling as a partner. Ms. Raman will practice in the firm's litigation and white collar groups and be resident in the Washington office.

Ms. Raman joined the Justice Department in 1996, where she served with distinction as a federal prosecutor for nearly 18 years in the Criminal Division and the U.S. Attorney's Office in Maryland. At the U.S. Attorney's Office, she held a variety of leadership roles--including Appellate Chief and Chief of the Southern Division Branch Office. In 2006, Ms. Raman moved to the Justice Department's headquarters as Senior Counsel to the Deputy Attorney General. She later held a series of leadership positions in the Criminal Division during the Bush and Obama administrations, including Acting Chief of Staff from 2008 to 2009, Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General and Chief of Staff from 2009 to 2013, and Acting Assistant Attorney General from 2013 to 2014.

As Acting Assistant Attorney General, Ms. Raman oversaw the work of more than 600 prosecutors and led the Justice Department's national and international criminal law enforcement initiatives, including investigations of complex financial fraud and market manipulation, money laundering and financial sanctions violations, foreign and public corruption, health care fraud, intellectual property theft, and cybercrime.

"Throughout her career, Mythili has distinguished herself as one of the most respected and accomplished prosecutors in the country," said Timothy Hester, chair of the firm's management committee. "She is a proven leader, an exceptional lawyer, and a person of the highest integrity. We are thrilled to welcome her to the partnership."

Ms. Raman said she was drawn to Covington by its reputation and the breadth of its trial, white collar, and other litigation work. "Covington is a very special place, and it is exciting to join a firm so well known for its excellence, collegiality, and commitment to the community," Ms. Raman said.

Ms. Raman earned her undergraduate degree summa cum laude from Yale University in 1991 and her law degree with honors from the University of Chicago in 1994. Following law school, she served as a law clerk to the Honorable Francis D.
