Hundreds Of Detroiters Will Share Ideas And Solutions To Improve City
5th Annual ARISE Detroit! Neighborhoods Rising Summit Will Focus On Quality Of Life Issues
DETROIT, Oct. 24, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Detroit residents are now registering for the 5th annual ARISE Detroit! Neighborhoods Rising Summit, which will feature a keynote presentation on improving city neighborhoods by Ken Cockrel Jr, the executive director of Detroit Future City.
Sponsored by the Kresge Foundation and Detroit Future City, the summit will take place Saturday, Nov. 1 at the downtown campus of Wayne County Community College District. The summit's purpose is to equip residents with strategies and tools to address many of the issues they face throughout the year, including crime, fighting blight, establishing neighborhood block clubs and repurposing vacant land.

Cockrel is the executive director of Detroit Future City and will highlight neighborhood revitalization efforts at the morning plenary session for the summit, which is themed: Creating A More Livable Community. Cockrel will speak at 9:30 a.m. at the morning plenary session for the event.
Summit participants will also hear a presentation on attracting new homeowners to Detroit – along with other city initiatives -- as part of the city's Neighbors Wanted program developed through the Detroit Land Bank Authority from Lisa Howze, director of governmental affairs for the City of Detroit. Howze will make her presentation at 12:30 p.m.
The summit will offer 12 workshops in areas ranging from fighting blight and crime and forming block clubs, to developing youth leadership programs, establishing community art programs, urban farming, developing farmers markets, obtaining -grants for neighborhood programs, faith-based neighborhood development and more. Workshops will be held in the morning from 10:45 a.m. to noon., and in the afternoon from 1:45 p.m. to 3 p.m.
The event will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the downtown campus of WCCCD located at 1001 W. Fort Street, 48226. It will include a continental breakfast and lunch.
The summit will also feature community organization exhibitors with information and resources to help neighborhood residents.
