According to a survey done by the NRF over the 2014 Thanksgiving weekend, Disney Frozen toys have knocked Barbie out of the No. 1 bought toy for girls; Barbie has held the No. 1 spot for the past 11 years. Lego toys are still the top purchased toy for boys.
With overall holiday sales still expected to be high this year, toy sales are still facing a huge competitor: electronic games. In 2013, toy sales slowed as many categories were hit by increased competition from video games and other consumer electronics. According to publisher Technavio, the global games market is expected to grow at a CAGR or 9.19% over the period 2013-2018. This growth is contributed to age compression in the U.S., with younger children wanting to play with "older" toys and games. Also pushing this growth is increased tablet use, which provides children with entertainment for longer time periods.
