Montessori Academy of Colorado Undergoes Major Renovation to Accommodate for Growing Elementary Program
DENVER, Dec. 10, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The Montessori Academy of Colorado (MAC) today announced that phase one of its two-part renovation is complete, with phase two scheduled to begin in 2015. With the renovation, MAC has successfully expanded its early childhood education program to include a unique-to-Denver elementary program. In January 2015, MAC will begin accepting kindergarten through 3rd grade applications for the 2015-16 school year. The school currently serves children 8 weeks through 2nd grade, with plans to extend to 5th grade by the start of the 2017-18 school year.
"MAC has offered innovative early childhood Montessori education for the last 13 years, and, based on parent and community feedback, we decided to renovate our building to accommodate an elementary program," said Nancy James, Executive Director at the Montessori Academy of Colorado. "The renovation not only benefits current students and families, but secures a beautiful learning environment for future generations of MAC students. We are the only Montessori school in the downtown Denver area that enrolls children as young as 8 weeks into elementary, making it an ideal choice for families who work and/or live in the downtown area."
The multi-million-dollar renovation nearly doubles the size of the MAC campus. The completed phase one construction includes new elementary classrooms, a library, art room, music room, newly designed auditorium, practical life kitchen, staff lounge and conference space. Phase two of the development is slated to begin in 2015 and will add a gymnasium, rooftop garden, and state-of-the-art media center.
MAC Elementary students benefit from Montessori work cycles, extended special classes such as art, music/drama, and physical education, community experiences, and PM enrichment courses, which include science, art, teambuilding, culinary arts and skill-building activities. The environment is enriched by dual-language instruction, where one teacher in the classroom speaks primarily English and the other speaks primarily Spanish. Furthermore, MAC Elementary students travel throughout the Denver metro area both on foot and via public transportation to take advantage of educational destinations throughout the Denver metro area.
"The beautiful city of Denver is the playground for our MAC Elementary students, as groups regularly embark on field trip outings to work cooperatively on projects outside a traditional school setting," said Jaclyn Greenbaum, MAC's Academic Director. "Our program is truly unique, as we combine both Montessori and place-based education philosophies in a dual-language environment."
