CRESSKILL, N.J., Dec. 9, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Big Brothers Big Sisters has been a positive force in the lives of children in New Jersey, aged 6-17, since 1967. The name change reflects a greater service area than the previous name suggested. "It's a lot easier to say, and a lot easier to remember," added Lori Konya, the organization's longstanding CEO and President.
The organization has been committed to matching children, especially those who come from single parent households, experience parental incarceration, or live in poverty, with screened, trained, and supervised mentors.
The mentorship program encourages self-confidence, good behavior, and enthusiastic performance in school, while decreasing the likelihood of substance abuse and reducing incidence of depression. In fact, after one year of mentorship, Little Brothers and Little Sisters are found to be:
- More confident and more engaged in schoolwork;
- Better able to get along with their immediate families;
- 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs;
- 27% less likely to begin using alcohol;
- 52% less likely to skip school.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern NJ is proud to be home to Tom Fascia, this year's Big Brother of the Year. Fascia, from Randolph, NJ, has been mentoring his little brother, Amir, for the past eight years. The relationship that the two share represents an ideal Big Brother / Little Brother relationship, as Fascia is in close contact with Amir's family members, and Amir participates regularly in Fascia's daily life.
Joseph Genovesi, President of RD Legal Funding, serves as a Board Member for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern NJ. He has been active with Big Brothers Big Sisters for over 13 years, and has been mentoring his Little Brother since he started working with the organization.
