No On Measure R: The California Nurses Association Urges a NO vote on Measure R
SAN RAFAEL, Calif., Oct 22, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The California Nurses Association (CNA) has joined Marin General Hospital nurses and Teamsters 856 in opposing Measure R in the Marin Healthcare District election on November 4, 2014.
The CNA has also endorsed the three candidates for the elected public District Board who oppose Measure R – Jennifer Hershon, RN, Evelyn Foster and Joe Salama, J.D.
According to Barb Ryan, RN, Chief RN Rep for CNA at Marin General Hospital, "Marin General Hospital nurses have gone to public meetings of the District Board with serious concerns about patient safety. But under the terms of the lease, only the Private Board has control of hospital operations. Other than a brief public comment period at the beginning of each, their meetings are closed to the nurses and the public. This situation will continue if voters approved Measure R on November 4th."
She also added, "The California Nurses Association and Marin General Hospital nurses urge you to vote NO on MEASURE R."
Measure R supporters propose giving a 30 year lease for the publicly-owned District Hospital to a private corporation which would run the hospital giving them almost $400 million in taxpayer bonds to spend with little accountability on rebuilding the hospital.
The private Marin General Hospital Board and administration is funding the campaign to provide itself with a 30 year lease and has already spent over a quarter of a million dollars in the campaign to date according to election financial filings.
