Organization Makes Season of Giving a Reality for Many Veterans
WINCHESTER, Calif., Jan. 3, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- For many, the 2012 holiday season may have been a rough time financially, with gift giving being a major part of holiday activities. And unfortunately, many of our nation's veterans, whether hospitalized or homebound, often have a tough time coming up with the resources needed to provide meaningful gifts for their families.

That's where national nonprofit organization Help Hospitalized Veterans (HHV) stepped in.
Since 1971, HHV has provided over 27 million therapeutic arts and crafts kits to hospitalized and homebound veterans worldwide.
The kits are unassembled and require different levels of ability to complete. With a variety of kits available—from leather moccasins and belts, wood clocks and birdhouses, die-cast and plastic models, paint-by-number sets and more, the therapeutic value of the projects is endless.
HHV also manages its own manufacturing plant, where nearly half of the over 800,000 kits were produced in 2012 alone.
For years, recreation and occupational therapists have been providing HHV kits to veterans in craft clinics, at patient bedsides, and in outpatient settings. And some of those veterans, during the holidays, will select a special kit to complete and give as a gift to a loved one or friend.
The completion of an HHV kit also supports a veteran's therapeutic and rehabilitative goals.
"It's a win-win situation," said one former therapist. "It makes the season of giving a reality for a lot of veterans who otherwise would not have the resources to provide gifts for their family over the holidays."
The kits also very often become treasured keepsakes, as they represent a recovery, be it a physical or emotional recovery.
