PG&E Presented The "Corporate Leadership Award" by Genesys Works - Bay Area
PG&E Deepens Commitment To Internships For Underserved High School Seniors
SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 23, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Genesys Works - Bay Area (GWBA), the San Francisco-based non-profit that helps underserved high school seniors get on a college and career track through corporate internships and professional training, awarded Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) the "Corporate Leadership Award." PG&E has significantly increased its commitment to GWBA this year by offering 19 internships, up from five last year when Genesys Works launched in the Bay Area.
"PG&E takes great pride in supporting underserved youth in our communities and is extremely pleased to work so closely with Genesys Works - Bay Area," said Jesus Soto, senior vice president, gas engineering, construction & operations at PG&E. "Genesys Works and the work it does embodies the core values of diversity and access to education that we try to live by through our community outreach and leadership work. We look forward to continuing to support this work and helping to build the diverse and skilled workforce of the future."
Mr. Soto also serves on the board of directors of Genesys Works – Bay Area.
Genesys Works provides participants with more than 1,000 hours in a corporate internship throughout their senior year. More than 96% of program graduates continue on to college.
This is the first year that Genesys Works – Bay Area will present a Corporate Leadership Award to one of its partner corporations. PG&E was one of the first companies to publicly support the opening of Genesys Works' Bay Area office in 2012, and has been actively engaged with the organization ever since. In addition to internships, PG&E volunteers have helped Genesys Works change the life trajectory for Bay Area youth through a variety of training experiences, including lunches with executives, mock interviews, and site visits. PG&E also hosted an event at its Pacific Energy Center in San Francisco to launch Genesys Works' Alumni Program.
"PG&E's expanded commitment to our program attests to its value to both the student and to the company," said Peter Katz, executive director of Genesys Works – Bay Area. "PG&E continues to model how corporations can help our youth and the community with workforce development, mentoring, and educational opportunities," he added.
The award will be presented at Breaking Through 2014, an event that celebrated Genesys Works Bay Area's class of 2014 and their families at the St. Regis hotel on October 21. Ed Reiskin, San Francisco's director of transportation, will be the featured speaker.
