Project SOS Celebrates 21 Years of Being a Valuable Resource to Parents and Teens
Project SOS (Strengthening Our Students), a North Florida-based non-profit dedicated to equipping, empowering and educating students to reach their short term and long term goals, is celebrating their 21st anniversary this year.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Oct. 21, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Project SOS, one of the largest and most respected non-profits in North Florida, will celebrate its 21st anniversary this year.
Project SOS (Strengthening Our Students) impacts over 15,000 students per year in North Florida alone and has been integrated into the curriculum for one of the largest school districts in the nation, Duval County, where entering middle school students and entering high school students in low income schools learn how to survive and thrive through this curriculum called the SOS Transition Course. These students are taught in a yearlong program how to establish and reach their short and long-term goals and the skills to avoid unhealthy choices that will keep them from their goals and dreams. Project SOS seeks to equip, empower and educate students to become productive leaders in their schools, workplaces, families and communities.
The program teaches the importance of establishing internal boundaries and using refusal skills effectively to avoid drugs, alcohol, pregnancy, bullying, violence and suicide. Students are also taught to stay focused and to strive to accomplish their written and posted goals and dreams.
Shorter versions of the Project SOS presentations last up to 8-hours and can be done via videos or live programs delivered in health classes or school-wide assemblies. Project SOS has designed their own curriculum that has been successfully evaluated, is age appropriate and medically accurate, and uses best practices in an EDUTAINMENT model. Students including even the most disruptive are totally focused and entertained while learning critical life skills. The curriculum, Envision: Defining Your Direction in Life is filled with activities, video clips, music, true stories and demonstrations all delivered by the high-energy young people who make up the Youth Development Department at Project SOS.
Other goals promoted by Project SOS include improving communication between students and parents and increasing understanding of the negative impact of bullying.
