Spain Takes Center Stage in Acker Merrall's October NYC Auction as "The Conquistador's" Cellar Exceeds High Estimate
Almost 40% of all new world records from this featured collection; US$3 million in sales achieved, $8m more on tap for November
NEW YORK, Oct. 20, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Famed Spanish estates CVNE, La Rioja Alta, Lopez de Heredia, Vega Sicilia and many others took center stage in New York City this weekend thanks to one of Spain's greatest and most extensive collectors, a man known as "The Conquistador." Demand was enthusiastic for this impeccably stored collection from a cellar deep within the Spanish countryside, as its results exceeded pre-auction high estimate during this weekend's US$3 million sale at Marea in Manhattan.

Burgundy and Bordeaux continued to dominate the Top 25 Lots, grabbing nineteen of the Top 25 with DRC leading the pack yet again thanks to the top lot of the sale, an OWC six-pack of 1999 DRC Romanee Conti, which sold for $80,275. California continued its auction momentum in the face of tough French competition, taking six of the Top 25 slots with Harlan, Screaming Eagle and Sine Qua Non leading the way for the Golden State.
"El Conquistador did as he is named – his collection conquered the attention of our clients around the world on Saturday. Buyers understood that his collection was truly unique and remarkable, and a reference point for Spanish wines that can age brilliantly for decades. It had that wow factor that collectors love," said Acker Merrall & Condit's CEO, John Kapon. "For those of you that missed it, another slice from this magical cellar will be available in Hong Kong in early November. We will conduct two amazing sales next month in Hong Kong and New York totaling over US$8 million, including a special birthday celebration in New York on November 20th."
