Support Techo on #GivingTuesday to Overturn Poverty in Honduras
The non-profit pledges that campaign funds will impact the lives of 25 families living in poverty
MIAMI, Dec. 2, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- TECHO joins #GivingTuesday, a national movement dedicated to giving, which encourages individuals and organizations around the world to support causes they care about during the holiday season. Supporting TECHO's initiative powered by social entrepreneurs is Larry King, who join forces to raise funds and make a difference in the Honduran community.
We have a day for giving thanks: Thanksgiving. We have two for getting deals: Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Now, we have #GivingTuesday, a global day dedicated to giving-back. TECHO aims to harness the power of the movement to overturn poverty in Honduras, and is calling upon businesses, entrepreneurs, and individuals to show their support on #GivingTuesday.
Honduras currently ranks 129th out of 187 countries on the UNDP's Human Development Index, with approximately 75% of the population living in slums on less than $1 per day. This year, TECHO's objective is to obtain $50,000 to fund the construction of 25 transitional houses in Honduras for the families living in the slum community of Lepaterique (located in Department Francisco Morazán).
This crowd funding could be a tipping point for many families living on less than $1 a day. The construction of transitional housing meets a need that is urgent and a priority in most slums. This activity also creates a link of trust between the volunteers and the community since it is a concrete, tangible and achievable solution in the short term. The house built by TECHO is a pre-manufactured module of 162 square feet, built in two days with the participation of youth volunteers and families in the community. Housing is just one of many of TECHO's community development program initiatives.
