The Miss Universe Cordaid Relief Fund Prepares To Help People Impacted By Typhoon Hagupit
ALEXANDRIA, Va., Dec. 9, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Thousands of people were forced to evacuate their homes as powerful Typhoon Hagupit set a collision course with the Philippines and battered the country over the weekend. Hagupit, known locally as Ruby, hit the same regions recently devastated by typhoon Haiyan.
Donations can be made to The Miss Universe Cordaid Relief Fund to support the people of the Philippines during a time of great need and provide long term recovery aid to build, and rebuild, flourishing communities.
"Our hearts go out to the people of the Philippines, the home to some of our most passionate fans," stated Paula Shugart, president of the Miss Universe Organization. "Cordaid has done a tremendous job to create a more resilient area since typhoon Haiyan hit and has helped those with inadequate shelter to build and maintain stormproof homes," adds Shugart. "We are committed to ensuring an immediate response to Hagupit (Ruby), to continuing to raise awareness and funds for long term recovery, and to strengthening the resilience of the people in these communities."
Working with local people to ensure their capacities are recognized and strengthened, Cordaid has constructed dams, reinforced bridges, and constructed stormproof homes, nurseries, and community centers over the past year.
Since last week, Cordaid has been working with communities and local organizations to prepare for Typhoon Hagupit. Boats were tied, communities organized, plans for response were made, communication was set up, and international and national staff were put on stand-by. Ron Langford, Cordaid manager in the Philippines said, "The preparedness activities with the communities and local organizations are really going well, better than I expected. I observe that we have already strengthened their capacities to deal with a Typhoon."
The Miss Universe Organization and Dutch development agency, Cordaid, partnered earlier this year to create a global fund that continues to raise awareness and money for regions of the Philippines struggling to recover in the wake of typhoon Haiyan and now, Hagupit. The two international organizations are raising visibility for projects that are essential for the country's recovery long after the emergency relief period has ended.
