Tools for Meeting Life's Challenges offers free informational seminar for families of children with cerebral palsy or catastrophic physical disabilities
PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 24, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Tools for Meeting Life's Challenges (Tools MLC), today announced that it will host a free seminar on Saturday, November 1, 2014, from 8:30 am to 12:45 pm at the Sheet Metal Workers Local #19 Union Hall at 1301 South Columbus Blvd. in Philadelphia for families and caregivers of children with cerebral palsy or catastrophic physical disabilities.
At a time when health care service delivery is changing rapidly, parents and caregivers need to be able to access benefits and services in the most efficient manner possible. Tools MLC is an organization dedicated to meeting that critical need.
Joseph Scullin, Director of Social Services for Tools MLC, said his organization has scheduled a number of panel discussions featuring experts that parents and caregivers can meet to learn about providing high quality care in a cost efficient manner. Scullin stressed that the seminar was free to attendees and the information provided was designed to educate them on ways to navigate through a complex health care system.
"Most families and caregivers are at a loss to find the best information they need to help them; and the situation, with the massive changes happening in healthcare, is becoming even more complex," said Scullin. "Our objective in hosting this seminar is to clear up the confusion for families and to simplify the process."
Subjects to be covered in the seminar include medical management options like the "Medical Home", how to choose the best medical providers, legal options for dealing with the consequences of cerebral palsy and catastrophic disabilities, planning for the future through benefit coordination, guidance for families and caregivers dealing with Medicaid, health insurance and other funded services, and how to advocate for an Individual Education Plan for a child.
"Many people and organizations raise money to find cures for various diseases, but Tools MLC is taking a more proactive approach to treatment and advocacy by equipping parents and caregivers with the means to become fully informed advocates on their own," said Scullin. "We are trying to help people to better navigate the maze of options they have and find real solutions to the challenges they face every day as caregivers."
