CHICAGO, Oct. 17, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- As a final semester engineering student at Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana Seccional Bucaramanga, Colombia, Diego Sebastián J. Serrano Suárez, will have a deeper understanding of professional engineering after completing an intensive 24-week internship at Greeley and Hansen, a global engineering firm specializing in practical engineering, architecture, and management solutions for complex water, wastewater and infrastructure challenges.
Serrano Suarez's internship was sponsored by the International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience (IAESTE), an organization dedicated to enhancing technical and professional development and promoting international understanding through one-to-one reciprocal work. The IAESTE Internship Placement Program matches university students majoring in technical fields with paid internships around the world.
Greeley and Hansen worked with IAESTE to specifically arrange for a Colombian engineering student to participate in a paid internship at the firm's headquarters located in Chicago. As part of IAESTE's reciprocal exchange program, a U.S. engineering student will also have the opportunity to gain real-world experience in an internship in another country.
"Greeley and Hansen is genuinely committed to promoting education and the transfer of knowledge within the engineering field and our industry," said John C. Robak, President and Chief Operating Officer of Greeley and Hansen. "We are very pleased to collaborate with IAESTE to bring a talented Colombian engineering student to our firm to work with us through this unique international internship exchange program." Robak added, "Colombia is a key growth market for our firm, so we are excited to provide Diego with an opportunity to work on a diverse range of assignments and real-world projects as part of our team. Our goal is to help him sharpen his technical skills and develop leadership and business capabilities so that Diego will gain well rounded experience that will allow him to pursue a successful career in the water and wastewater industry when he returns to Colombia."
"Through this internship, I've been working closely with an experienced engineering mentor on a variety of interesting and challenging projects to design and optimize existing wastewater treatment and water distribution systems in large U.S. cities," said Serrano Suarez. "For me, it's an amazing experience to be completing my internship in the U.S. at the headquarters of Greeley and Hansen, a respected international firm that has been doing project work in Colombia for many years. I'm continuing to learn new things while working on real projects every day with professionals who are dedicated to protecting the water environment and welfare of communities.
