Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas Spotlights Accomplishments of International Youth Leaders
University hosts the fourth annual Laureate Global Fellows event
BALTIMORE, Oct. 20, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas (UPC) is hosting the annual Laureate Global Fellows event today in Lima, Peru, to recognize the accomplishments of 20 young social entrepreneurs from around the world.
The Laureate Global Fellows, hailing from 17 countries, created innovative projects that address some of society's most pressing problems and that have the potential to be sustainable over the long term. This year's group of Fellows tackled issues ranging from sustainable housing to the environment, from health care to youth education.
Ana Loayza, a Fellow from host institution UPC, along with her partners created Project Puno, an initiative that builds low-cost housing for families living in harsh conditions high in the Andes. The 2014 class also includes two students from Universidad Latina de Costa Rica, Daniel Uribe and Silvia Vargas. Daniel leads an organization focused on preserving Costa Rica's precious coastal ecosystems, while Silvia integrates recycling services into local restaurants and hotels, and educates these companies about socially responsible practices and the benefits of employee volunteerism.
Over the course of a week, the Fellows completed an intensive leadership development retreat. They will spend two days at UPC's Campus Villa, attending a half-day conference and executive roundtable. The conference will showcase their work and give them the opportunity to share ideas with students, faculty, government officials and business leaders. The Fellows will also be honored during an awards ceremony.
"The world needs more young, pioneering leaders like these 20 Fellows, to build a better future for the next generation," said Douglas L. Becker, chairman and chief executive officer of Laureate Education, Inc. "Every year, I am inspired by the ingenuity and commitment of these Fellows, and I am delighted Laureate is able to support these remarkable young people."
The Laureate Global Fellows program is a partnership of the Sylvan/Laureate Foundation and the International Youth Foundation's YouthActionNet® program, which supports emerging social entrepreneurs.
