U.S. Army and Great Minds in STEM™ Inspire and Support Hispanic Students to Pursue STEM Careers
Army STEM Leaders to be Honored at the Annual HENAAC Conference
ALEXANDRIA, Va., Oct. 8, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Army and Great Minds in STEM™ (GMiS) are joining forces to promote educational and career opportunities for Hispanic students in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The Army will partner with GMiS at the annual HENAAC conference, Oct. 11-13 in Orlando, Fla. Conference attendees will have the opportunity to learn about the Army's significant college tuition and related financial benefits, as well as about the myriad of STEM-related careers and specializations available within the Army.
According to a report by the President's Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans, by the year 2025, Hispanic children will make up about 25 percent of the school-age population. Yet, Hispanics remain significantly underrepresented in the STEM fields. Organizations like GMiS and the Army consider outreach a critical mission to foster interest in STEM among Hispanic youth.
As a long-time supporter of Great Minds in STEM, the Army will highlight its career and educational opportunities through several events during the HENAAC conference. Army personnel will mentor a team of college students in a series of STEM-related challenges in the HENAAC College Bowl. The Army will also lead seminars and workshops on career opportunities in the biological sciences. During the HENAAC Career Fair, the Army will host an interactive exhibit featuring advanced military technologies.
The U.S. Army annually grants more than $250 million in merit-based ROTC scholarships for youth to complete their college education. Further, the undergraduate engineering program at the U.S. Military Academy (USMA) at West Point is one of the oldest engineering schools in the U.S. and is recognized as having one of the top undergraduate engineering programs in the nation. Cadets pursuing degrees at West Point and through university ROTC programs also receive world class leadership training. Upon graduation, they are commissioned as second lieutenants in the Army and can serve in a wide range of STEM related careers.
During the HENAAC Conference, Great Minds in STEM will honor several soldiers and cadets. Capt. Daniel M. Chicola of the Georgia Southern University ROTC program will be recognized as a STEM Military Hero during the HENAAC Salute to STEM Military & Civilian Heroes dinner. In addition, cadets from West Point and university ROTC programs will be honored at the Future STEM Leaders Luncheon, a venue to recognize top Hispanics for their academic and leadership achievements.
