xMax to be Showcased as an Emergency Communications and Disaster Response Solution to California Public Safety Stakeholders
xG Technology Announces Pilot Network Deployment with BayRICS in Three San Francisco Bay Area Municipalities
SARASOTA, Fla., Dec. 18, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- xG Technology, Inc. ("xG" or the "Company") (Nasdaq: XGTI, XGTIW), a developer of patented wireless communications and spectrum sharing technologies, has announced the deployment of a pilot xMax broadband wireless network with the Bay Area Regional Interoperable Communications Systems Authority ("BayRICS") that will cover parts of three San Francisco Bay Area municipalities: Livermore, Dublin and Pleasanton. Upon completion of the initial deployment in these three cities, it is expected to be expanded to surrounding areas.
BayRICS requested the deployment to enable an evaluation of the capabilities of xMax for use as an emergency communications and disaster response solution by public safety stakeholders. Representatives from law enforcement, fire, and emergency management in the three initial pilot deployment cities and surrounding areas will be invited to field test the network. The deployment network infrastructure will consist of xMax cognitive radio networking equipment including wireless access points, end-user devices and a mobile control center.
Established in 2011, BayRICS is a 13-member Joint Powers Authority (JPA) serving the San Francisco Bay Area. Its mandate is to oversee funding, policy and operations of regional public safety communications projects. BayRICS coordinates the build-out and operation of wireless voice and data networks that will serve over 25,000 first responders to protect the life and property of 7.5 million Bay Area residents and 16 million visitors annually.
The deployment will allow xG to demonstrate a number of public safety use cases for the xMax system. Among the key features of the system that will be on display and benchmarked will be the following:
- High-capacity, high-availability fixed and mobile voice, data and video services;
- An all-IP design supporting existing public safety and COTS devices, applications and functions;
- Ability to leverage all commercial cellular networks without depending on them;
- Private, dedicated network with active interference mitigation technology to make the system resistant to being jammed or hacked;
- Full compatibility and interoperability with FirstNet when it is fielded
BayRICS is particularly interested in evaluating the ability of xMax to add cost-effective and reliable broadband data capabilities to existing public safety voice communications systems currently in use throughout area municipalities.
Commenting on the announcement, Barry Fraser, General Manager of BayRICS, said, "We are very eager to try out this network pilot with xG and see the xMax system in action. Our goal is to ensure the safety of our first responders in the field and provide them with access to reliable and interoperable communications tools that can deliver a high degree of situational awareness. We are keenly interested in evaluating the performance and features of xMax and how it can support and enhance our operations."
"We look forward to working with BayRICS and their local public safety stakeholders to help them fully experience how xMax delivers capabilities beyond the offerings of traditional public safety systems," said John Coleman, CEO of xG Technology. "The deployment of an xMax network in areas under the authority of BayRICS represents an excellent showcase of the capabilities of our private mobile broadband wireless solution. xMax provides clear, reliable voice, video and data communications services where and when they are needed, and this is vital for emergency management and first responders."
